CONSTRUCTIVE CONSERVATION
CONSTRUCTIVE CONSERVATION
Aswemove swiftly through the twenty-first century it comes as no surprise
that theenvironment inwhichwe liveandworkneeds tochangeandadapt to
accommodate theneedsof futuregenerations.AtEnglishHeritagewebelieve
that sustainabledevelopmentsandconservation-led schemesare increasingly
important inpromotingeconomicgrowthforaprosperousfuture.
The UK is scattered with a huge range of historic sites that hold important
heritagevalue. TheSouthWest ishome toovera thirdofEngland’sScheduled
Monuments such as Stonehenge and historic buildings such as the Marine
Parade Shelters in Lyme Regis (see p45). In addition to this the SouthWest
holdsmanyhistorically significant buildingsandprotected landscapes suchas
theGrade I registeredparklandatBictonArena inEastDevon,which ishometo
ClintonDevonEstates’RolleEstateOfficeheadquarters.
EnglishHeritage leads the sector in a positive and collaborative approach to
conservationofourhistoricbuildings,monuments, landscapesandconservation
areas.ConservationprinciplesandConstructiveConservationpoliciesareused

It is a commonmisconception that if a building or historic site is listed it is
thereforeprohibitedtomakeanychangesatall.However,repairandadaptation
of our existing building stock is inherently sustainable and can add economic
valuetoasiteortothewidercommunity.Constructiveconservationencourages
landownersto lookattheirpropertiesandunderstandthehistoricalsignificance
of the building or the historical connection to the land and community
surrounding it. If there isasignificantheritagevalueassociatedwith thesite, it
isofgreatadvantage to the landownerand theeconomyasawhole torestore,
changeandadapt ittosuittheneedsofthecurrentclimate.
