CONSTRUCTIVE CONSERVATION
Employmentwithintheheritagesector isalsoahugeeconomicbonuswithover
100,000peopleemployedinthetraditionalbuildingindustrywith5,000ofthose
beingapprentices intraditionalcraftskills.
Constructive conservation shows the many ways in which historic buildings
can contribute to job creation, business growth and economic prosperity. It
explainswhat canbeachievedwhenamulti-disciplinedproblem-solving team
worktogethertotakeapositiveandcollaborativeapproachtoconservationand
managingchangeforthebenefitofasustainablefuture.
Some topexamplesofconstructiveconservation in theSouthWest include the
RoyalWilliamYard inPlymouth,oneofthe largestprojects intheWestCountry.
The formerRoyalNavalbuildingshad fallen intodisuseuntil theywereadapted
foruseascafés,bars, restaurants,museum,artgalleries,officesandresidential
spaces. Theproject has createdanextraordinaryenvironment that hasmade
ahugedifference to thecity. Thebuildingshavebeenadapted tosuit thenew
usagebuthavekeptthehistoricalsignificanceandvalueinaveryinterestingand
impressivearchitecturalstyle.
ThePrincesshayshoppingcentre intheheartofExeter isan impressiveexample
of constructive conservation. The new development is very respectful of the
setting,accessanduseofthehistoricalcathedralgroundswhilstalsorecognising

firstplacepoepleseewhenvisiting
thecapital.
the significanceof thepostwar architecture in the city. Thedevelopment has
real historical value aswell as creating a very successful and enjoyable retail
environment.
On a national scale, St Pancras International Station in London is a fine
example of constructive conservation benefitting the economy, community
andindustry.RestoringthemagnificentGradeIlistedtrainshed,thisisastation
that isahighlyvisibleexampleof theway thatheritage ledconservationcan
encourage growth and contribute to economic and transport infrastructure.
Considered to be Britain’s shop window as the first thing people see when
visiting the capital city the results show that radical ideas can be used to
enhancesignificant featuresandcreatesomethingnewandexciting from the
past.This isatrulydynamicdesignthathighlightsthe impressivearchitecture
andheritageofanessential transportasset.
Inorder topromoteeconomicgrowthanda sustainable future in theUKwe
mustcontinueto invest inourownheritage.Understandingandadaptingsites
to represent their individual historical value is key to theconservationof our
assets. EnglishHeritageareproud tobeapart of eachproject that helps to
stimulate greater awareness of constructive conservation and to increase
confidence in the use of historic places to support regeneration, restoration
andcommunitydevelopment.

AlthoughthesheltersalongtheseafrontatLymeRegiswerenotsignificantenoughtobe listed, they
weredeemedtobeaverypositiveaspectofthetown’sConservationAreaand, inconsultationwith
EnglishHeritage,someoftheshelterswereupdatedandotherpartswererebuilt.Therenewedwaterfront
contributestothetown’stourismeconomybycombiningthehistoricsheltersthataddsomuchcharacter
totheseafrontalongwithnewshelters, twonewshops,aperformancearea,amarketareaandtwonew
communityrooms.Theprojecthasalso improvedthephysicalandvisual linksbetweenthetown,harbour,
ListerandLangmoorGardensandsurroundingareas.
